Visual timetables in early years SEND settings

Visual timetables help children develop communication skills and make sense of their day.

To use a visual timetable:

  • hang images vertically at a child's eye level
  • use only six images at a time
  • use widget symbols or clear, simple photos you have taken of an activity
  • remove activities one at a time, so that the children can see when the activity is finished and the next activity is indicating what is coming next
  • make sure you have the children's attention when taking images from the timetable
  • show the children what is happening next using the next image
  • allow children to take turns in helping you use it
