Song time in early years SEND settings
When you use song time, make sure that you:
- have enough adults sitting with the children so they can support where needed
- have all the song props and equipment ready before you start
- warn the children beforehand that it is song time, using the visual timetable picture
- slow the speed of the song down so the children can follow
- make sure children with hearing or vision problems are at the front opposite the song leader, so they can make good eye contact
- use action songs where you can, as the children will learn the actions before the words
- ask other adults or groups to be quiet and not cause distractions
You can make song time more interactive by using:
- pictures or toys representing objects to give clues about the song you are singing (e.g. a toy spider for Incy Wincy Spider) - you can also use these to let the children can choose which song they want next, or pick at random from a basket
- puppets related to the song or a character in the song, that can help demonstrate the actions from the song
- a song bag full of items related to the song (e.g. a bag or box full of animals for Old McDonald), which the children can take turns to pull out
