Giving praise in early years SEND settings
When you give praise to a child with SEND, try to give praise that is:
- relevant to and immediately after the behaviour
- specific to the child and the behaviour they are being praised for
- free from criticisms or sarcasm
- alongside smiles, eye contact, enthusiasm and gestures
- given whenever the child is behaving well, rather than just when they are behaving perfectly
- in front of other children provided that this will not embarrass the child
- alongside a reward such as choosing an activity or story they enjoy
Do not offer a child a treat in the form of a bribe to stop them behaving badly.
