Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure strategy

About

In 2020, transport in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole was responsible for 33 percent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and by encouraging and enabling the transition to Electric vehicles (EVs) we will be able to improve air quality and aid meet our target within our Climate and Ecological emergency action plan.

We are keen to encourage the installation of more EV charging infrastructure across the conurbation, particularly as we move towards the Government’s target of stopping the sale of petrol and diesel powered vehicles by 2030.

Public electric vehicle infrastructure strategy (PEVIS)

Our Public electric vehicle infrastructure strategy (PEVIS) is a commitment to promote and enable EV uptake in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

The provision of EV charging infrastructure is a strategic issue us and we have looked at how best we meet the future needs Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and how we can speed up the installation of new charging facilities across the area.

This will include working with private sector providers so as to ensure there are sufficient numbers of charging points available as the number of EVs on our roads grow.

Electric Vehicle charging consultation

In 2023 we ran a 6 week consultation on EV charging to identify and assess:

  • scale of EV ownership and prospective ownership across the area
  • demand for local public EV charge points
  • interest in community EV charger sharing
  • ‘barriers’ to transitioning to EV’s from petrol/diesel vehicles
  • interest in community club car electric vehicle hire
  • locations where there is a need for publicly available EV charge points and electric community car club vehicles

Based on the feedback and information gained from the consultation we then developed an action plan to implement the PEVIS.
