We have been allocated £1.89 million from the third round of the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Safer Roads Fund to reduce the risk and severity of collisions along the A35, Christchurch Road, between Iford Roundabout and St Paul’s Roundabout in Bournemouth.

As well as improving road safety along the A35, we have combined resources with the Towns Fund (Better Boscombe) to extend the area of proposals to include Ashley Road, Boscombe. These proposals also focus on improving accessibility for pedestrians and disabled people, with the aim of making the area more inviting and safer for everyone.

Proposals include:

  • additional crossing facilities for pedestrians and people who cycle with footpath widening at St. Swithun’s roundabout and a new contraflow along St Swithun’s Road South
  • new pedestrian signalised crossing on Ashley Road, north of Christchurch Road roundabout
  • reconfiguration of the northern arm traffic islands and new hatch and lane markings on Christchurch Road and Palmerston Road roundabouts
  • several junction enhancements to further reduce the risk and severity of collisions and improve pedestrian accessibility
  • extension of existing 20mph zones in Boscombe to include additional residential roads and sections of the A35 and Ashley Road
  • a new zebra crossing on Christchurch Road for pedestrians and school children
  • cycle wands to be added to the existing cycle lanes along Christchurch Road between Heathcote Road and Portman Road

These proposals are the outcomes of an extensive consultation that ran from 22 March 2024 to 23 April 2024.

This consultation included drop-in events and a survey about the proposals. Face-to-face surveys were also conducted within the proposed area. You can find full details about the consultation on the Have your say website.
