Utility companies are carrying out roadworks in Christchurch at the beginning of 2026 in order to improve infrastructure and upgrade services for local residents.

BCP Council is not involved in these works and understands how frustrating closures can be for residents.

We've recently put forward proposals to introduce a Lane Rental Scheme across our busiest routes that could cut roadwork disruption by up to 1/3.

Legally we are required to consult with residents before applying to the Secretary of State for Transport for permission to implement the scheme: the consultation remains open until 1 February 2026.

In the meantime, please remember that local businesses and services are open as normal in Christchurch - we hope you'll continue to support them where you can and appreciate your patience whilst these works are carried out.

More information on what the works entail, and who is carrying them out, can be found using One.Network.

Cllr Andy Hadley, portfolio holder with responsibility for highways maintenance at BCP Council, said: “We know there is never an ideal for roads to be closed but closures are necessary to allow for utility companies to improve the existing infrastructure and, in turn, upgrade services for local residents.

“It’s important to note these works in Christchurch are not carried out by BCP Council and, indeed, around 70% of roadworks are carried out by utility companies.

We completely understand how frustrating roadworks can be for residents and commuters and the team have been liaising closely with the utility companies responsible. We have also recently announced licensing plans that would significantly reduce road work disruption across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

“The Lane Rental Scheme proposals that we have put forward would cut that disruption by incentivising works to be planned to be undertaken more quickly and carried out during off-peak travel periods - meaning better roads and less congestion for everyone. This is currently out for consultation before it can be implemented.

“Shops and services are still open - please continue to support local businesses where you can and we appreciate your patience. For more information on these specific works please contact the appropriate utility company.”
