Plans to improve the accessibility to fitness and leisure facilities are set to be discussed by councillors.

A £1.8million investment is being proposed to extend the award-winning Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre, in Christchurch, to create two brand-new purpose-built studios.

The proposed expansion represents a commitment to improving the long-term health and wellbeing of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole residents.

Councillors will discuss the plans at BCP Council’s Cabinet meeting on 14 January – with a report outlining a planned timeframe for the improvements which, subject to planning permission, would aim to be complete by July 2027.

Investing in the facilities would enable a more diverse timetable to support wider community use and a purpose-built environment for classes.

If approved, the proposals will deliver –

  • Improved health and wellbeing: the new studios will create opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, supporting physical and mental health, rehabilitation, and early intervention programmes. Specialist classes and GP referral schemes will help residents take positive steps towards healthier lifestyles.

  • Accessibility for all: with more space and a varied timetable, the centre will offer activities for different abilities and needs, including inclusive sessions for those with special educational needs and culturally focused programmes.

  • Long-term community benefits: This investment will strengthen Two Riversmeet as a hub for local life, helping people connect through shared activities. By increasing capacity and enhancing the leisure offer, the project is expected to boost membership, generate income to reinvest in services, and ensure the centre continues to serve the community for years to come.

Councillor Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for destination, leisure and commercial operations at BCP Council, said: “Two Riversmeet is already a fantastic example of how locally managed services meet community needs – helping connect people and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles.

“These proposals would allow us to go even further and are a significant investment in Christchurch and the health and happiness of our residents.

“By creating modern, accessible spaces for fitness and leisure we’ll be able to offer more choice and flexibility for residents of all ages and abilities.”
