Efforts to prevent people from becoming homeless and keep them more settled in their homes is set to continue with a funding boost of £313,466 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

The funds will be added to the Homelessness Prevention Grant for 2025/26.

Every day, BCP Council’s Homelessness Early Prevention Service works tirelessly to stop homelessness before it happens, including:

  • Helping families and carers keep a safe and stable home for children and young people
  • Working with landlords to prevent evictions and keep tenancies secure
  • Supporting survivors of domestic abuse to find safe accommodation
  • Supporting someone through sudden financial shock, like job loss or benefit delays
  • Stepping in early when a tenancy is at risk.

The additional funding will keep this vital service running, so the Council can continue to provide tailored guidance and hands on help that gives people the security and confidence to move forward.

Cllr Millie Earl, Leader of BCP Council, said: “Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a story. This isn’t just about funding, it’s about giving people the security they deserve. It’s about making sure no one has to face the fear of losing their home.

"And it’s about working with landlords, whose role is vital in keeping homes open and communities strong. A safe home is the foundation for everything else, and everyone deserves that chance.”

The Homelessness Early Prevention Service provides practical advice and compassionate support to give people stability and hope. In the last year around 1500 households were assisted by the team, with over 200 helped to stay in their homes through a range of innovative, tried and tested interventions, and over 600 were assisted to find an alternative safe, secure, affordable new home.

Landlords are a vital part of this story. This funding will enable the council to continue to provide practical support to landlords, including:

  • Training and guidance to help navigate the new legislation
  • Financial assistance, such as rent and deposit support or property guarantees
  • Continued backing for our Property Investment Grant Scheme, helping bring more homes into use

These measures ensure homes remain available for individuals and families across the community.
