A free public WiFi service delivered by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council’s Smart Place programme has been extended in Boscombe; helping to keep residents and visitors connected in the area.

Funded by the government’s Towns Fund programme, the network now extends to Boscombe Cresent, Churchill Gardens, Kings Park and AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium; helping to keep home and away football fans safe and informed on their journey.

Signage has also been installed at the various WiFi hotspots around the area, providing an easy-to-scan QR code that will connect users directly.

Councillor Millie Earl, Deputy Leader of BCP Council and Portfolio Holder for Connected Communities, said:

“It is fantastic to see the free Wi-Fi service extended further to such popular local locations.

“With so much of our everyday lives being reliant on online information, it is incredibly important that we continue to tackle the digital divide and ensure our residents can safely access and research what’s available in their area and where they can get support if needed.

“The council is dedicated to keeping its residents and places connected by modern infrastructure and this public network is a prime example of how we are ensuring our communities stay connected and included.”

Highlighting the need for a reliable and secure connection in the area, the network previously helped 20 businesses connect during the 2023 Bournemouth Air Festival when they encountered limited local 4G and 5G coverage due to high demand.

Since its success at last year’s Bournemouth Air Festival, the service has attracted over 14,000 further users, including those who have limited access to the internet.

Supporting and reaching these residents is a key priority for the BCP Council Smart Place programme, which aims to tackle digital exclusion and keep communities connected and engaged.

As well as delivering local information like events and community initiatives, the service supports local businesses through promoting their services and local offerings.

BCP Council Smart Place R&D Consortium partners; CCN Communications Ltd; Yo Wireless; Volker Highways and Cambium Networks, supported the build and delivery of this network to our local area.

Users can select ‘BCP Council Smart Place free Wi-Fi’ on their device to gain a secure internet connection.

As part of the wider work with the Towns Fund scheme, the BCP Council Smart Place programme is focused on creating a digitally connected place that attracts businesses, creates jobs and drives high street footfall.

Using technology to support regeneration and deliver transformational benefits, the programme also works with partner companies and R&D Consortium members to develop a series of smart applications that will bring benefits to our communities.
