Could you be Proud to Care?

A campaign that seeks to celebrate adult social care workers in order to inspire more people into the industry, has launched.

BCP Council’s Proud to Care campaign focuses on the hard-working carers across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole who love their jobs and are making a valuable contribution to local residents’ lives every single day.

It’s part of a drive to attract more people into a career in adult social care, which currently has a vacancy rate of around 10% across England.

Part of the campaign features Laura, a social care personal assistant who talks passionately about her job, commenting, "It never occurred to me that it would be the thing that I would do that would be lifelong, and…now I honestly couldn't think of doing anything else. Like every other job just doesn't have the same kind of feel or the same kind of joy!

Proud to Care aims to provide a better understanding of care and support work, whilst highlighting the different options available for people looking for a career in the industry. It showcases four different career pathways within care, to highlight that it’s not just the elderly or people with physical difficulties who need help. Opportunities in care encompass adults of all ages and a wide range of abilities.

Councillor Karen Rampton, Portfolio Holder for People and Homes, BCP Council commented:

"Proud to Care is about celebrating everyone who works in this sector, everyone who goes out of their way to improve the lives of others through hard work and dedication to their job. I’d like to thank all carers for all their commitment to the people who need them the most.

"A career in care can be very rewarding, both for the carer as well as the people they care for. We need to encourage more people to work in the care industry, and through this campaign we hope to change some misconceptions around the job – and inspire people to apply for the vast range of positions that are available right now in this sector, building a career that helps our residents live happy and healthy lives."

Many of the roles within adult social care also offer on the job learning and plenty of training and career progression routes for those willing to learn.

As Laura continues "I had no experience...but you learn very quickly. You just need to love and care for people and I think you’re going to do a great job – you can always learn all the skills on the job!"
