Over 310 street parties will be taking place across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole over the Platinum Jubilee weekend (2 June – 5 June) to celebrate the Queen’s remarkable 70 years of service. With more parties set to be taking place on private land and open spaces, the area will be truly awash with communities coming together to celebrate the extraordinary milestone in the spirit of fun and friendship.
The celebrations will kick off on Thursday evening (2 June) as each town takes part in the national beacon lighting ceremony which will be attended by each mayor.
Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Vibrant Places said, "I am so pleased to see the number of parties and other events that are being organised across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Everyone has embraced the Jubilee weekend and are wanting to get out there and celebrate!"
In Bournemouth on Thursday 2 June, the beacon lighting event will be taking place at 9:45pm on the East Overcliff near to the John Egging memorial, followed by fireworks in the bay.
Councillor David Kelsey, Mayor of Bournemouth said, "I think the amount of parties that are being organised shows the respect that people have for our monarch. She has been an inspiration for so many and deserves all the compliments she will receive. As an ex-serviceman I can only say I was so proud to have served Her and I thank her for Her Service to us"
Christchurch will be lighting their beacon at Mudeford Quay on Thursday 2 June at 9:45pm but the celebrations will commence at 5pm with an entertainment programme planned and food & drink stalls.
Councillor Sue Bungey, Mayor of Christchurch said, "We have been planning these celebrations for months and we are very much looking forward to seeing the whole of Christchurch Town decorated in red, white and blue bunting and festooned in flowers. Our new Town Crier will be announcing the start of the celebrations at 2pm on Thursday 2 June and we have a twilight procession planned along the beaches of Mudeford Quay just before the lighting of the beacon. We are going to have a great time and I encourage everyone to take part in this historic moment in our nation's history."
In Poole on Thursday 2 June, the beacon lighting will be at Sandbanks at the same time, 9:45pm followed by fireworks in the bay. A Park & Ride service will be available with additional evening journeys being laid on every 15 minutes by Morebuses’ Service 60 to Sandbanks providing a quick and convenient way to visit the event.
Councillor Julie Bagwell, Mayor of Poole said, "It is going to be a great weekend of celebrations to commemorate Her Majesty's long reign and selfless service. I look forward to visiting as many street parties as possible. If you choose to be at one of the beacon lighting events or you are simply having a small gathering of friends in the garden it’s an opportunity to come together and have some fun!"
Over the course of the weekend further events and activities will be happening with a Jubilee theme. At Druitt Hall in Christchurch on Saturday 4 June, Christchurch BID is hosting a free Children’s Jubilee Tea Party & Cupcake Competition. Aimed at children under 13, and their families, this event includes plenty of activities and fun for all. And if you like food themed events, the Christchurch Food Festival and Poole Seafood Festival are taking place. In Poole a big screen will be in Falkland Square showing Jubilee events throughout the weekend. On Saturday there will be a live music stage and on Sunday there will be a Jubilee Street Singalong in various locations all provided by Poole BID.
The large screen will be back in the Lower Gardens in Bournemouth showing the national events being broadcast by the BBC such as the live concert, ‘Platinum Party at the Palace’ and films related to the Queen’s 70 year reign. There are lots of events happening at your local library too – from afternoon teas and traditional sing-a-longs to many craft activities to excite and interest every age.
You can find out about local events on the Platinum Jubilee website which has an interactive map which will display all the events and activities that will be taking place across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area as well as the rest of UK.
