two new accessible and energy efficient homes in Bournemouth

Two accessible and energy efficient bungalows in Bournemouth are ready to welcome new residents, thanks to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council.

The environmentally friendly homes have been constructed to support residents who need accessible facilities at affordable rents.

Each bungalow has two bedrooms and a level access shower which is a wheelchair accessible requirement.

All BCP Council new builds are built to Passivhaus principles which stipulate the inclusion of triple glazing, airtight construction and elevated levels of insulation which all provide great occupant comfort.

Passivhaus is a quality assured standard and methodology for low energy building, which can help create buildings which use around 75 per cent less energy than standard practice for a UK newbuild.

Electric heating in the homes is supplied by an air source heat pump and together with excellent, A-rated levels of insulation helps reduce energy bills and CO2 emissions.

Heating and cooling demands on these new buildings are further eased by the installation of the Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system. This is a whole house ventilation system that both supplies and extracts air flowing throughout a property.

BCP Council is working within the Council Newbuild Housing and Acquisition (CNHAS) strategy for 2023 to 2028. The new homes have been built by the council’s construction works team.

Councillor Kieron Wilson, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Regulatory Services, BCP Council said:

“I’m delighted this development is now complete and will provide accessible housing.

“This project in Bournemouth fits in with our long-term plans to modernise our properties where required and reduce future maintenance costs. This can include the redevelopment of existing properties.

“We are sure that the attractive design, high energy saving and insulation levels together with great accessibility inside and out will help enhance the lives and wellbeing of the residents.”
