Apply for work experience at your local library

Many of our library branches offer work experience placements for young people. Placements typically last for 1 week and show how the library works. Young people will work closely with library assistants with the day to day running of the library and help with events, activities and special projects.

Choose a library

When choosing a library branch, make sure that you are able to get there easily. Most people choose a branch close to where they live, but we will accept applications from people living anywhere in our area as long as they can work out their own transport to the library.

Apply for a placement

We are a very popular choice for work experience, so make sure you apply as early as possible. We will send you our application form, which you should return to your first choice library either in person or by email.

Once you have applied

If the library is able to offer a placement, they will invite you in for an informal interview to talk through the next steps.

If the library is not able to offer a placement, they will pass your application on to your second choice branch. If this second branch is also fully booked for placements, you can talk to another library and start the application process again.

We always do our best to find a placement for our applicants, but we are a very popular choice and usually receive many more applications than we have space for.
