Overview
Discover more about local history in the area at our history centres, museums and libraries.
The Heritage Zone
Located in Bournemouth Library, the Heritage Zone is a great way to learn about the area’s local history. It also has plenty of information about the wider Dorset and Hampshire areas.
Much of the material in the Heritage Zone is for reference only. However, we do have items that you can borrow, including books, DVDs and maps.
If you’re unable to borrow an item you can make a photocopy or scan, subject to copyright. There's a small charge for using the photocopier.
If you're planning to do some research, you can reserve a computer or viewer in advance. You can also reserve in person at Bournemouth Library, but there may be a wait.

Red House Museum and Gardens
A former Georgian workhouse, the Red House is now a museum exploring the story of Christchurch from before the Ice Age to modern times.
Dorset History Centre
The history centre is the archives service and local studies library for Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and Dorset. It houses Dorset's local archives, from council records to personal collections.
Poole Museum
Situated in the Old Town, Poole Museum tells the story of this historic maritime town.
Exhibitions chart Poole’s development from prehistory to the 21st century - from a 295BC log boat discovered in the harbour to recognition of the town’s importance in the 1248 Longspee Charter and the trading history of 17th and 18th century merchants.
The museum is also home to over 150 pieces of world-famous Poole Pottery.
