Beach hut maintenance
We are responsible for the maintenance and repair of council owned beach huts in Bournemouth and Poole.
This includes the identification and management of any risks from asbestos-containing materials.
Asbestos-containing materials in beach huts
Asbestos used to be a common building material and can be found in some beach huts built between 1950 and 1970, typically in roofing or floor tiles.
Many people have concerns about the health effects of asbestos, but if left undisturbed, it's not dangerous. You can still use your beach hut as normal.
If you're planning to carry out any changes to the inside of your beach hut that may damage or disturb its fabric, for example, by drilling or cutting, please contact your local beach office for advice before starting work.
We’re responsible for the maintenance and repair of our beach huts. We are the duty holder as defined in Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
We must:
- identify whether asbestos is present
- assess its condition
- manage any risks.
We have up-to-date management plans that we act upon if needed. Read the HSE guidance on why asbestos is dangerous.
