As part of the BCP Homes responsive repair service, we provide our tenants with access to a handy-person service. A major part of the handy-person role is to provide help and support to our older tenants and tenants requiring additional support, by carrying out odd jobs and repairs that would normally be considered a tenant’s responsibility.
The service provides practical help with minor tasks that tenants may struggle to do themselves and that our main repairs service does not cover. This support helps reduce the risk of falls and enables tenants to live independently for longer.
Eligibility for the scheme
To be eligible, you must be a BCP Homes tenant and either:
- live in specialist housing such as sheltered housing, independent senior living or extra care, or
- have a long-term health condition or disability in any housing type and no family or friends who can carry out the jobs
How the handy-person scheme works
The aim of the scheme is to help tenants with practical support to carry out tasks around the home. The types of tasks the handy person can help with include:
- small jobs around the home
- fitting handrails
- clearing pathways around the house (not gardening)
- fitting curtain rails and hanging curtains
- hanging pictures
- moving furniture within the house and fitting shelves
- replacing tap washers
- unblocking sinks
- replacing light bulbs
- fitting door closers
- replacing door locks
- fitting WC seats
In communal areas, the handy person also helps scheme managers put up and take down Christmas decorations during December and January.
