You can apply for a postal vote if you want to vote by post.
Apply for a postal vote
You can apply for a postal vote on GOV.UK for one of the following:
- a single election on a specific date
- a specific period
- the maximum period (three years), after which you will need to reapply
You can also apply by completing a paper form for a postal vote.

If a new postal application is successful you will receive confirmation from us. Postal voting packs will be issued as soon as possible following the close of candidate nominations and will be sent to you first class, however, if you applied nearer the deadline then you may not receive your pack until the Friday before polling day.
How to complete and return your postal vote
When voting by post, you should:
- complete your ballot paper in secret
- complete the postal voting statement
- put the ballot and statement in the envelopes provided
- seal the envelope yourself
- post as quickly as possible to make sure it’s counted

If you’re too late to post your ballot paper back, you can hand it to your local polling station by 10pm on polling day. However, this will require you to fill out a return of postal vote form.
Change where your postal vote is sent
Make a new application for a postal vote if you move house or you’ll be away from home when the postal vote is sent out.
Replace a lost or damaged ballot paper
Your ballot paper needs to clearly display your details and voting choice. If it has been damaged you may need a new one.
To check if you need a new one, you can call us on 01202 123 400 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm and Friday 9am to 4:30pm).
You may also need to collect your new postal vote in person if it is close to election day.
You cannot vote at a polling station if are registered to vote by post, even if your ballot paper was lost or damaged.
How to cancel your postal vote
If you want to cancel your postal vote, you will have to tell us:
- your full name and address
- that you no longer want to vote by post
You can send this to us by completing our online form, or by contacting us.
You will only be able to cancel your postal vote up to 11 working days before an election takes place.
