Claim a Council Tax refund

If you’ve received a Council Tax bill showing a credit balance on your account, it means you’re due a refund.

Executors

If you’re an executor or a beneficiary of an estate, we need some additional information before we can send a refund. The evidence can be uploaded when making your request for a refund.

Where probate is issued, a copy of this or letters of administration will need to be provided.

If you do not need probate, you will need to provide:

  • the death certificate
  • the will
  • proof of your identity

All other refunds

Our financial regulations state that refunds are only made to the original source/bank account.

If the bank account has been closed, evidence of this will need to be provided and new bank details submitted for the refund. Where the Council Tax liability and the closed bank account were in joint names, we will require confirmation from all parties of the bank details for the refund to be sent to.

If payments have been made by debit card, a copy of the bank statement showing the bank account number and sort code, date of payment, reference number paid and amounts for the most recent payments will be required in order to issue the refund. These payments must cover the value of the refund being claimed.
