A stray dog is one that is roaming freely in a public place or off its own property and is not under the control of someone.
If you have found a stray dog
If it is safe to do so, check to see if the dog has a collar and tag with the owner's details as you may be able to contact them and arrange for them to collect it from you.
If the dog does not have any identification, you can take them to a local vet to scan them for a microchip who can then help contact the owner.
If you're not able to do this and the dog remains in your care, you must report it online or call us on 01202 123 789.
Our officers are unable to come out to uncaptured strays but please make sure you report any sightings as this may help any owners that have already reported their dog as missing.
A Dog Control Officer may be unable to collect the dog right away and you may be asked to take the dog to a reception centre or to keep the dog until the next working day if it is safe to do so.
Out of hours
Our working hours are 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. If you find a dog outside of our opening hours, call us on 0800 506 050 to let us know.
