As a care assistant in a residential care home, you will be supporting older, sometimes frail people, people living with Dementia and long term conditions.
The role involves providing support with all aspects of personal care, social and physical activities whilst ensuring their privacy and choices are respected.
What the role involves
The day to day aspects of this job might include:
- help with meals and drink and to promote good nutrition and hydration
- support for residents by attending appointments with them
- help with personal care such as washing and dressing and other relevant personal tasks
- skin integrity care / pressure sore care
- support with medication, applying prescription creams / ointments
- close work with health professionals and social workers
- working with health professionals and social workers so that residents are well looked after, protected from abuse, and treated with dignity and respect
- end of life care
The role may also involve other specific tasks such as being a keyworker or undertaking relevant health and safety tasks.

What skills and qualifications you need
To undertake this role, you need to be:
- compassionate
- kind
- patient
- flexible
- willing to help and support clients
- be well organised and proactive
Good communication skills are essential for this role as you will need to communicate any changes in your clients wellbeing to health professionals and/or family members and you will be required to make daily records.
This is an entry-level role and you will be required to:
- complete and keep up to date with any mandatory training
- obtain a Care Certificate
- pass a DBS check
- prove you are legally able to work in the UK
- you may also need a good GCSE grade in English and Maths
- prove you are legally able to work in the UK
Training and progression
When you first start your role, you'll be trained in all essential skills including:
- basic health and safety
- first aid
- moving and handling
- training for any specific needs the people you are caring for may have
