The Poole High Street Heritage Action Zone Cultural Programme is in its final months after successfully working with enthusiastic delivery partners to deliver some positive outcomes for Poole Town Centre.
Accomplishments
- educational workshops given to over 600 pupils at five local schools, with a week-long public exhibition of creations, including the display of model ships, colourful fish and a letter writing project
- events on the high street including creative activities, recording of oral histories, shared memories and ideas of how to improve the area, walking tours, historical characters and live music
- new Discovery Trail leaflet created to inform visitors of the long-standing trading relationship between Poole and Newfoundland, with over 700 leaflets distributed so far
- commission of a large, 120sqm, public art mural at 58 High Street / New Orchard commemorating the marine biologist and zoologist, Henry Gosse, who grew up in Poole on Skinner Street. The artwork is in the style of Gosse’s incredible collection of journal drawings and Gosse went on to work and continue his studies in Newfoundland.
- the research, planning and writing of a Community Play by Angel Exit Theatre whom alongside Lighthouse Poole have secured Arts Council England & other funding to produce and perform the play ‘Salt’ in July 2023
Upcoming projects
- the writing and production of a Community Suite of Music created with local schools
- high street events to promote the Community Play
- updates to the Poole Trail hotspots within the HAZ area of the Town Centre
