Consumer advice

Trading standards only investigate traders who may have broken the law.

Citizens Advice is the first point of contact nationally for any residents seeking consumer advice or when making a complaint.

Citizens Advice will give you practical and impartial advice on how to resolve your consumer issue and tell you the law which applies to your situation. Where applicable, they will refer details about reported traders to us and we will contact you if necessary.

They can provide advice and guidance about such topics as:

  • buying or repairing a car
  • scams – check if something is a scam and what to do if you have been scammed
  • home Improvements – how to choose a trader, what to do if there is a problem with building work
  • when something goes wrong with a purchase – company has gone bust or how to return faulty goods
  • pressure selling – what to do if you have changed your mind about a purchase or want to cancel an order

Contact Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 (free from landlines and mobiles). Lines open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, closed on public holidays.

Citizens Advice handle calls on our behalf and help with any complaint. If it sounds like a crime has been committed, they’ll pass your complaint to us.
