Bluetongue is a notifiable disease mainly spread by biting midges.

As of 15 December 2024, the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area is within the Bluetongue disease restricted zone. This means animal movements are now restricted.

Bluetongue virus affects:

  • sheep
  • cattle
  • other ruminants such as deer and goats
  • camelids such as llamas and alpacas

If you keep livestock, you must keep a close watch for and report any suspicion of bluetongue in your animals.

There are no risks to people or food safety, meat and milk are safe to eat and drink.

Outbreaks can result in prolonged animal movement and trade restrictions.

Report suspected bluetongue

If you suspect bluetongue you must report it immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) by calling 03000 200 301.
