Hospital transport for older or vulnerable adults

What to do in a medical emergency

In a medical emergency, call 999 and ask for an ambulance.

You will usually be expected to make your own way to the hospital if it is not an emergency.

If your condition or disability makes it hard to get in and out of a car or use public transport, you may be eligible for free patient transport.

You may also be able to claim for the cost of transport to hospital through the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) if you're referred for specialist NHS treatment or tests.
