Home care workers and support workers you might support a number of different people in their own homes. As part of your daily work, you'll be helping people with various aspects of their daily lives, offering support to live as independently as possible.
Clients will be adults of any age, with a range of support needs that include:
- learning or physical disabilities
- frailty
- long term needs such as mental health or dementia
What the role involves
The day to day aspects of this job might include:
- home visits to help clients in their home
- help with personal care such as washing, dressing, eating and drinking
- help with practical tasks around the home
- support people with their shopping
- monitoring people’s health and administering medication
- working with other health professionals
- providing people with their emotional wellbeing such as reducing isolation and loneliness

What skills and qualifications you need
The main skills are a friendly face and a willingness to help. Other skills that would be useful include:
- kindness and people skills
- good communication
- flexibility to adapt to whatever is needed
- strong organisational skills
- the ability to work to your own initiative
You may also need a good GCSE grade in English and Maths and possibly a social care qualification such as Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, although these aren't always needed and if you're interested in getting them, you can often work towards them once you start the job.
Training and progression
When you first start your role, you'll be trained in all essential skills including:
- basic health and safety
- first aid
- moving and handling
You can also benefit from formal qualifications such as a Diploma in Health and Social Care as well as opportunities to progress and develop in adult social care and specialise in a certain area or take on more responsibility.
